
The Fair Housing Act of the United States was passed by the House in 1968. The purpose of this law is to protect the buyer and tenant rights of any type of discrimination by the seller or lessor. It also prohibits discrimination by municipalities, mortgage lenders, banks or insurance companies whose discriminatory practices inhibits a person's right to housing facilities.
The Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, familial status and disability. Each time an individual can protect themselves under this law if they are denied the right to buy or rent a property based on these factors. Also the advertising of any kind which promotes the preference of any kind on the basis of any of these factors may also be prosecuted under the Fair Housing Act.
Discrimination based on race and color
Most cases, buyers or tenants were denied the right to housing because of a false statement, downtime and are directed to other areas based on race or color. Even if the law was passed in 1968, however, this has always been a major problem. In many cases, it appears that the victim is unaware.
