which is better? to go to juilie arts school of music or yale to become a lawyer like my father?

i have played me violin since i was 7 and i play duos and solos,i just love my music,but my father is a lawyer and we live in a 7 bedroom house, which is a better future? yale and lawyer or juilie atrs and pro violinst?

I am a person who went to Oberlin College & Convervatory, studied both music and liberal arts, and then became a lawyer. So I have some perspective on your question.

The sad thing is, no one can know what future would be better for you. It really depends on what the best future would be for you as a person. Are you someone who would be happier totally engaged in music, and doing nothing else? Are you someone who is driven to succeed at all costs? Do you enjoy reading, writing, and arguing? Do your friends consider you a persuasive person? All of these are questions whose answers should factor into your answer.

I agree with the person who noted that there are very good music faculty at Yale, by the way. There is something to be said for getting a broad-based education as a college student regardless of whether or not you want to become a professional violinist (Yo Yo went to Harvard not Curtis!).

You don't have to give up music entirely to go into the law (depending on how intensely you pursue it). You do have to give up the law to go into music, however!

Music, like law, is a tough business. I have not tried to "make it" as a professional musician, but I know enough about people who have to know some things:

The people who have really made it in music are incredibly talented, hard working,and lucky.

There are a lot of very bitter professional musicians who have lost their love of music because they depend on their instrument for their livelihood (i.e., to put a 1 bedroom roof over their head) and it has let them down, or become painful.

Yet, some of the best experiences life has to offer come through music. It is a great and wondrous thing to be a part of that when it happens. For some that makes up for all the slogging.

Law is also a tough business. Lawyers have incredibly high standards and are very poor at providing positive feedback. Trial work is really hard, because you have to be tough, persuasive, and unstoppable, and also really exciting. The hours can be unbeleivable, but, the pay can also be very good.

Competition is high in the legal market, but, imo,even higher in the music world. People from all over the world are competing for American orchestra jobs, even section violin slots. If you're really good, and lucky, the committee will pick you from behind the screen as the person who has played best that day.
